Finding and Viewing Your Canvas Courses
Overview
Description: This article explains the three main ways to view and access your courses in Canvas — the Dashboard View, List View, and Calendar View — and how to switch between them to stay organized and manage coursework efficiently.
Estimated Time of Completion (ETOC): 10 minutes
Instructions
- Log into Canvas
- Go to the Canvas Login Page and sign in using your Capitol Technology University credentials.
- Once logged in, you’ll be directed to your Dashboard, the default course view.
- Dashboard View (Default View)
The Dashboard is the main Canvas homepage and provides quick access to your current courses and assignments.
- Each course card represents an active course.
- Click a course name to open that course’s homepage.
- Click an assignment name (if visible) to go directly to that assignment.
Tip: You can customize your dashboard to show only your favorite or most-used courses by clicking the Courses icon → All Courses → selecting the ★ star next to the course name.

- List View
List View displays your upcoming assignments and events across all courses in a simplified list format.
- Click the List View icon (three vertical dots) in the top-right corner of the dashboard to switch views.
- You can also navigate by selecting Courses from the left-hand menu.
- Select a course name to go directly to that course’s homepage.

- Calendar View
The Calendar View organizes all your assignments and events by due date.
- Click Calendar in the left-hand navigation menu.
- Assignments appear as colored entries — each color corresponds to a specific course.
- Click on an assignment to open it directly.
- Completed tasks are shown with a strikethrough line.
- Use the Month, Week, or Agenda toggle (top-right) to adjust how you view upcoming deadlines.

Troubleshooting
- Make sure you are logged into Canvas using your Capitol Tech credentials.
- Refresh the page or log out and back in.
- Clear your browser cache and cookies.
- Use a recommended browser, such as Google Chrome or Firefox.
- If a course doesn’t appear, it may not have started yet or may be hidden from your Dashboard. Try selecting Courses → All Courses to check.
