Customizing Gradebook Views in Canvas

Overview

The Canvas Gradebook offers flexible viewing and sorting options to help instructors manage student progress more efficiently. You can rearrange columns, hide unpublished assignments, enable color coding, and display additional columns such as notes.

This guide walks you through how to customize your Gradebook layout and display settings to suit your teaching and grading style.

Estimated Time to Complete: 10 minutes

Instructions

  1. Open the Gradebook
  2. Rearrange Gradebook Columns
    • You can organize assignment columns in a way that makes sense for you:
      • Click the View menu in the top-left of the Gradebook
      • Hover over Arrange By
      • Choose from the available options:
        • Assignment Name
        • Due Date
        • Points
        • Module
        • Assignment Group
          • “Due Date” or “Module” view is recommended for aligning with course flow.

  3. Hide Unpublished Assignments
    • To keep your Gradebook clean during setup:
      • Click the View menu
      • Select Hide Unpublished Assignments
        • This hides columns for assignments you’re still working on and haven’t published.
  4. Enable Color Coding (Optional)
    • Color coding helps you quickly identify assignment statuses (e.g., late, missing, resubmitted).
      • Click the View menu
      • Select Status
      • A color key will appear at the bottom of the Gradebook
        • Colors are customizable. Click the gear icon > Status Color tab to modify.

Red arrows highlighting a way to edit the colors

  5. Display Additional Columns
    • You can enable extra columns for grading or notes:
      • Click the View menu
      • Check the box for:
        • Notes: Add private comments about students (not visible to students)
        • Unsubmitted Assignments: Useful for identifying non-submissions
        • Final Grade Override: Allows you to manually override a final grade.

  6. Filter the Gradebook
    • Use filters to narrow your view:
      • Click the Apply Filters button (upper right)
      • Choose to filter by:
        • Assignment Group
        • Module
        • Section
        • Grading Period
      • Click Apply Filters
        • Great for large classes or courses with multiple assignment types.
