How to Copy Your eSyllabus from a Previous Term
Overview
If you’ve taught a course in a prior term, you can save time by copying your previous eSyllabus instead of starting from scratch. This allows you to carry over existing content and simply update fields like dates, deadlines, or contact info as needed.
This guide walks you through how to copy a previous version of your eSyllabus and update it for the current term.
Estimated Time to Complete: 10 minutes
Instructions
- Open Your Course in Canvas
- Log in to Learn@Capitol (Canvas)
- Click the course you want to update from your Dashboard
- Access the eSyllabus Tab
- From the course menu, click eSyllabus
- The current term’s syllabus will appear
- Click “Copy from Previous Term”
- Look for the Copy from Previous Term button or link at the top of the eSyllabus page
- A list of previously taught sections will appear
- Select the Course to Copy
- Find the previous version of the course you want to use
- Click Select or Copy
Canvas will import the content from the selected syllabus into your current course.
*Note: Some fields may remain locked if they are automatically populated by the system (e.g., course title or credit hours).
- Review and Update the Copied Content
After copying, review all sections to ensure accuracy. Focus on:
Section | What to Update |
Instructor Info | Update email address, office hours, phone number if changed |
Meeting Times | Adjust days/times or note if asynchronous |
Assignment Schedule | Update recurring deadlines (e.g., “Every Sunday at 11:59 PM ET”) |
Reading Materials | Confirm texts are still in use or update edition info |
Important Dates | Check term-specific dates like start/end, breaks, exam periods |
- Save the Updated eSyllabus
- Click Save when you’ve finished reviewing and editing
- Confirm that the most up-to-date version is visible and correct
Reminder: Your eSyllabus must be completed before publishing your course.
