Understanding Cross-Listed Courses in Canvas

Overview

Description: Some graduate-level courses at Capitol Technology University are cross-listed, meaning that two or more course sections are combined into a single Canvas course shell. This setup helps instructors manage course materials, announcements, and grading efficiently while maintaining enrollment across multiple programs or course codes.

For example, you may be enrolled in a course labeled DRW-930, but you might also see another section listed under “People” such as AIT-930 or AVT-930. These courses share the same instructor, materials, and assignments but are linked together within Canvas for ease of access.

Cross-listing does not affect your grade, enrollment status, or transcript. It only changes how the course appears inside Canvas.

How to Confirm You’re in the Correct Course

  1. Log in to Canvas: https://captechu.instructure.com/
  2. On your Dashboard, open your course labeled DRW-930 (or your assigned course title).
  3. In the course menu, click “People“.
  4. Under Sections, you’ll see your name associated with two or more course sections — for example:
    • DRW-930
    • AIT-930
    • AVT-930

This indicates your course has been cross-listed, and you are correctly enrolled.

Submitting Assignments

All assignments, quizzes, and discussions should be submitted in the course shell labeled DRW-899 (or whichever course name appears in your Dashboard).
Even if you are enrolled in multiple sections, you only need to complete work in this main course shell.

Assignments submitted in other linked sections (if visible) will not be graded or visible to your instructor.

Accessing Course Materials

All learning materials — including announcements, discussions, and grades — are managed through the primary course (e.g., DRW-930).
If you do not see additional course names listed in your Dashboard, this is expected and does not mean you were dropped from a course.

Troubleshooting

Issue

Explanation / Solution

I only see one course (e.g., DRW-899) on my Dashboard.

This is normal. Cross-listed courses are merged into one main Canvas shell.

I can’t find my assignments under another section code (e.g., [Other course name]).

All coursework and submissions are housed under the primary course (e.g., DRW-899).

My course list doesn’t show all of my enrolled sections.

Cross-listing combines sections to simplify navigation. You remain enrolled in all associated sections, even if they’re not listed separately.

My instructor mentioned multiple course codes.

That’s correct — they teach a combined section. Your participation and grades are recorded normally under your assigned course ID.
