Overview

Description: This article provides an overview of how students can use Canvas Groups, including joining a group, viewing group memberships, uploading files, and creating discussions.

Estimated Time of Completion (ETOC): 15 minutes, depending on group setup and participation.

Course Statement

Your instructor will determine how groups are used in the course. Groups may be assigned for collaborative projects, discussions, or group submissions. Review your course syllabus or instructor announcements for details on group expectations.

Joining A Group

To learn about joining a group as a student, you can:

If you do not see any available groups to join, contact your instructor.

Viewing Your Canvas Groups

You can check your current group enrollments using the Global Navigation Menu in Canvas:

  1. Click on Groups in the Global Navigation Menu.
  2. If no groups are listed, you have not joined or been assigned to a group.
  3. Previous groups will be listed under the Previous Groups header.

For step-by-step instructions, visit: How do I view my Canvas groups as a student?

Uploading Files to a Group

After joining a group, you can:

  • Upload and share files within your group space.
  • Submit assignments on behalf of the group (only one student needs to submit).

For details, see: How do I upload a file to a group?

Creating a Group Discussion

If enabled by your instructor, you can start a Group Discussion in Canvas. This allows group members to collaborate and share ideas.

To create a discussion, refer to: How do I create a discussion in a group as a student?

Troubleshooting

  • I don’t see any groups in Canvas. Check with your instructor to ensure you’ve been assigned to a group.
  • I can’t upload files or submit assignments. Confirm that your group space is active and that you have the necessary permissions.
  • Group discussions are missing. Not all courses enable group discussions; check with your instructor if this feature is available.
