Understanding Assignment Weights in Canvas

Overview

In Canvas, assignment weights are used to calculate final grades based on the relative importance of different categories of assignments. Instead of treating all assignments equally, you can assign “weights” to specific groups (e.g., Quizzes, Homework, Projects) to reflect their contribution to the overall grade.

How Assignment Weights Work

  1. Assignment Groups: Assignments in Canvas are organized into groups (e.g., Discussions, Exams, Labs).
  2. Weighting Groups: You assign a percentage to each group based on its importance. For example:
    • Homework: 30%
    • Quizzes: 20%
    • Final Project: 50%
  3. Grade Calculation: Canvas calculates the final grade by multiplying the average score of each group by its weight and then summing the results.

Why Use Assignment Weights?

  • Reflect the importance of different assessments in your course.
  • Ensure students understand what areas to focus on.
  • Customize grading to align with your syllabus.

Example:

If a student in DRW-810 scores:

  • 85% in Ending Document Assignment Group (weighted at 40%)
  • 90% in the Progress Surveys Assignment Group (weighted at 10%)
  • 75% in the Discussions Assignment Group (weighted at 15%)
  • 100 % in he ARB Draft Assignment Group (weighted at 30%)
  • 75% in the Timing Plan and Starting Document (weighted at 5%)

Final Grade = (85 × 0.4) + (90 × 0.1) + (75 × 0.15 ) + (100 × 0.3) + (75 × 0.05 ) = 88%

Setting Up Assignment Weights in Canvas

  1. Navigate to “Assignments” in your Canvas course.
  2. “Assignment Settings” button (3 dots in the top-right corner).
  3. Select “Assignment Group Weights” and check the box to enable weights.
  4. Enter percentages for each assignment group.
  5. Save your changes, and Canvas will automatically apply the weights to calculate final grades.
