Setting Up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for Microsoft 365

Overview

Description: This article provides a step-by-step guide to setting up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for your Microsoft 365 account, adding an extra layer of security by requiring a secondary method of verification in addition to your password.

Estimated Time of Completion (ETOC): 15 minutes.

Instructions

  1. Log in to Microsoft 365 Security Settings
  2. Set Up Your Authentication Method
    • You’ll be prompted to set up MFA after logging in. Select your preferred method:
      • Mobile App:
        • Select “Mobile App” and click “Set up.”
        • Download the Microsoft Authenticator app from your device’s app store (Google Play or Apple App Store).
        • Open the app, choose Add Account, and scan the QR code displayed on your screen.
        • Confirm by entering the generated code.
      • Phone Authentication:
        • Select “Phone” and enter your mobile number.
        • Choose Text me a code or Call me for verification.
        • Enter the code sent to your phone or answer the call to complete the setup.
  3. Test Your MFA Setup
    • After setting up, Microsoft will prompt you to test your MFA method.
    • Complete the test by verifying your account using your selected method.
  4. Confirm Your Backup Option
    • If prompted, add a backup method (e.g., alternate phone number or email) for recovery purposes.
  5. Save Your Settings
    • Ensure the setup is saved. You’ll now be required to verify your identity with MFA during future logins.

Troubleshooting

  • No QR Code Appears: Refresh the page or try another browser.
  • App Not Syncing: Ensure the Microsoft Authenticator app has internet access and notifications enabled.
  • Verification Code Not Received:
    • Double-check the phone number or email address entered.
    • Ensure your phone can receive texts or calls.
  • Browser Issues: Clear your cache and cookies, or switch to an updated browser like Chrome or Firefox.
